Have you ever heard the term MetroPark? If not, here is what that means. MetroPark is short for Metropolitan Park, or a regionally administrated park or OpenSpace. There are several MetroPark systems in Ohio, and we’re going to look at the two closest to us here at Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast: the Coupling MetroPark and the Milan Towpath MetroPark, which are part of Erie MetroParks.
The Coupling MetroPark is a 26 acre park with miles of trails and small, non-motorized boat access to the Huron River, and only a 5 minute drive from Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast. Along with bank
fishing sites, a wooded nature trail, picnic tables, shelters, grills,
restrooms, a sledding slope, and a
grass volleyball court. Developed around an historic railroad theme on an undisturbed Huron River floodplain, the Coupling MetroPark allows leashed dogs and is open from 8 am-dusk. They have some really great programs at this park, including monthly Morning Kayak Paddles and Evening Kayak Floats, Hiking outings and Art in the Park.
Our next stop is the Milan Towpath MetroPark, which is less than 10 minutes by foot from the B&B! Also open from 8am to dusk, the almost a mile path is a narrow park that follows the path of an early
canal and railway. The Towpath runs
through a site of a Moravian Indian mission village. After the village
of Milan was established in 1816, the Huron River was dammed below the village
and Merry’s Mills, a gristmill and sawmill, was opened, establishing the
area surrounding the Towpath. At this uniquely Milan park, you will find pet-friendly walking trails, birding,
snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
